Sierra Leone is seriously off track in meeting the Millennium development goals (refereance the MDGs
from a website) more so those related to the health, education, hunger and the economic targets.
Though the infant and maternal mortality rates are improving there is much to be done in water and
sanitation with less than 10% of rural households adopting hygienic practices or owning a toilet. The
resultant has been a marked increased in the number of diarrhea related deaths for children and adults
alike.
The adult literacy rates are still very low with less than 20% of the total population being functionally
literate. Access to affordable finance and business skills in deeply rural areas is still illusive with little or
no structures to support rural credit, savings and remittances.
What we are doing
We are profiling communities in four chiefdoms each in our operational districts of Moyamba,
Tonkolili, Bonthe, Kenema, Kailahun, Pujehun, and Bo. These profiles would capture the socioeconomic
realities of these communities including the status of water and sanitation, literacy,
community population disaggregated by children, women, youth and the aged, access to market
finance, and basic education/social facilities. These profiles would bring out felt needs as prioritized by
the communities themselves.
How You can HELP
You can go through hundreds of community profiles across our operational communities in Sierra
Leone and adopt a community. Are you from Sierra Leone? if your community has not been profiled for
as little as $ 20 we can have your community profiled.
Adopting a Community
You can adopt a community and support; literacy, community health, credit, or education you can
choose from the list of communities and for $ 20/month you can support payment of community
facilitation for literacy and community health.
You can help your community start a lending and savings scheme for a little as $20 for a small
entrepreneur.
Accountability
You would get updates of your support and progress reports on the contribution your are making to
community development in Sierra Leone. Household and participants stories and the list of
contributors would be posted on our site with copies been sent to individual contributors
Get involved now it is a call to action to stem rural poverty.
